When you dream, the possibilities are endless.
Ten years ago as an undergrad, I dreamed of one day working for one of the big five Wall Street firms.
Five years ago, I dreamed of one day being a top producer in my division.
Three years ago, I dreamed of one day developing the strategy and vision for my sales force of 400 financial advisors… and one day, I could set direction on everything from revenue growth to the client experience to the culture that defines who we are and how we do.
Today, having done all that and realizing that this trend can continue on indefinitely, for as long as I dare to dream – I now realize that my dreams have always been too small! What a shame to not fully harness this potential.
So, today my dreams are built of a slightly different fiber. The fiber is stronger, more substantial and more far-reaching. One day, I will have traveled the world and experienced cultures in a way that will have changed my insides forever. One day, I will be able to taste wine and distinguish flavors like citrus and currant. One day, I will teach my little ones how to bake the perfect chocolate chip cookie – a little crunchy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside – which I have yet a few years to perfect. One day, I will have a bright and fresh library full of books and books: ones I’ve read, ones I intend to, and ones I’ve published – a library with a glass door that opens to a wide deck full of greenery that leads to stairs that deposit my bare feet onto the soft sand of a sparsely populated private beach. One day, I will do something that I love to do everyday. My blood and sweat will go towards helping others build their dreams rather than to helping a mega-company beat its next quarter’s earnings estimates. One day… [insert Jane Eyre-ness] oh reader – the possibilities are endless!
Not sure exactly how I’ll get there, but now that I know where I want to be, I can relax a bit. Doesn’t matter how it happens or how long it takes, just that I have the faith that it will come.
